How to photograph some amazing Christmas lights this season... Mickey Style!
With DSLR cameras being so common and accessible nowadays, getting some great shots of the beautiful lights on your Christmas tree can be super easy! I love playing with the lights and different shapes! Check out a few images from this season, I included my all of the details :) Check out last year's post with the heart shape!
My setup. A flashlight pointing at Mickey with a piece of paper over it to diffuse the light.
Cut out a Mickey shaped head about the size of a dime. Be sure to leave plenty of space around to hold it so light doesn't shine through the edges.
1. Set your camera in Manual (M)
2. Set your focus in Manual (on your lens) focus on the ornament
3. Shutter speed 1/50
4. Apeture 1.4
5. ISO 1250
6. White Balance Kelvin 6000
Hold the Mickey cut out over the lens as close as you can get it. You'll start to see the shapes appear in the lights, you can adjust from there!
Results!
Now you try!
Don't forget to steady yourself, as setting your shutter speed at 1/50 may cause some shake! Take a deep breath, lean up against something or use a tripod!
The larger your apeature, the better the outcome. I was able to go down to a 1.4, using my Sigma Art 50mm. (LOVE).
Bumping your ISO up will cause grain. I toned mine down in ACR by bumping the luminance slide +20.
Images are almost SOOC, with a little adjustments with the curves. I was going to show a side by side comparison, but they look almost identical, it wasn't worth it.
If I didn't go into enough detail about something, just shoot me an email! I'd be happy to answer any questions!
Enjoy!
